The South African Mint was established in 1890 in Pretoria. After the Anglo-Boer War the Mint produced Sovereigns under the British Royal Mint marque (with the 'SA' mint mark) until 1932.
In 1967 the Mint launched the Krugerrand — the world's first modern bullion coin. The 22ct gold Krugerrand was designed as a way for Western investors to own South African gold, and during the 1970s it accounted for roughly 90% of the global gold-coin market. The Mint added a silver Krugerrand in 2018.
Krugerrands are LBMA Good Delivery accredited and remain among the most-recognised bullion coins worldwide.
