The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint, established to refine gold from the Western Australian goldfields. It struck Sovereigns with a 'P' mint mark until 1931 and is now wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia.
Perth Mint launched the gold Australian Nugget (later renamed Kangaroo) in 1986 and the silver Kookaburra in 1990. Its 1kg silver bar is among the most-traded retail silver bars in the UK. The Mint is LBMA Good Delivery accredited and operates the Perth Mint Certificate Programme for allocated gold storage.
