Gold Sovereign

Also known as: Full Sovereign, Sovereign

The modern Gold Sovereign is the UK's flagship bullion coin: 22-carat (.9167) gold with a fine weight of 7.32g (just under a quarter of a troy ounce). Issued by The Royal Mint since 1817 in its current form, it carries a face value of £1 but trades on its gold content plus a small premium. Sovereigns are popular with UK investors because they qualify as legal-tender CGT-free coins under HMRC rules.
